Can Bearded Dragons Eat Leeks?

Can bearded dragons eat leeks? Yes, they can. But only the green part and occasionally. Feeding them the white part of this vegetable is not healthy and not really edible.

This article will explain the benefits about feeding your bearded dragon leeks.

Benefits of Feeding Your Bearded Dragon Leeks

The green parts of leeks are the most nutritious. They contain vitamins A, K, and C. Vitamin A improves your bearded dragon’s eyesight. It also reduces the chance of metabolic bone disease because it helps your pet build healthy skeletal tissues such as strong bones and teeth.

Vitamin K helps produce proteins needed for blood clotting and bone development. Vitamin C, on the other hand, helps your bearded dragon grow and repair injured tissues.

Good Source of Hydration

Bearded dragons need to be adequately hydrated to prevent desiccation. Eating high moisture vegetables such as leeks helps this process.

Nutritious

Leeks contain beneficial nutrients such as iron, calcium, vitamin C, manganese, vitamin K, potassium, and copper. They also contain calcium, which is vital to your pet’s growth and development.

Bearded dragons can eat raw and cooked leeks. It does not matter. Make sure you cut them into smaller pieces equal to  the size of the gap between your beardie’s eyes.

How to Get Leeks for Your Bearded Dragon

You can buy leeks from convenience or grocery stores. If gardening interests you, you can plant and grow this vegetable yourself. All you need to do is plant it in a suitable place, water it, and let it grow.

Leeks should last about 4-8 weeks before going bad so long as you properly secure them.

Other Information to Know

Not all bearded dragons love leeks. If your bearded dragon does not enjoy it, do not feed it to them.  If your bearded dragons cannot adapt to leeks, there are other nutritious and acceptable vegetables. They include the following:

  • Beet greens
  • Green beans
  • Collard greens
  • Bell peppers
  • Bok choy
  • Turnip greens
  • Mustard greens
  • Acorn squash

When deciding on the green to introduce to your bearded dragon, only serve leafy green vegetables that are moderately rich in calcium. Moderation is essential because while your bearded dragons need calcium to develop their bones, too much of it can be dangerous.

Your bearded dragons can eat kale and other green leaves, but they must be finely chopped and fed in moderation!

Be careful with frozen vegetables and do not feed them onions of any variety.

Live food such as dubia roaches and worms, is nutritious and will also keep your bearded dragons healthy. They also eat dandelions, boiled eggs, and brussel sprouts,  basil, and swiss chard. But moderation is key.

Final Thoughts

Leeks are good for bearded dragons, but not all the time.  Feed your bearded dragons leeks in small pieces so that you don’t overwhelm them. Allow your beardies to eat fruits too. Ensure they eat apples, bananas, as treats for a balanced diet.

When feeding your bearded dragon, the proportion and nutritional value is important. This way, your bearded dragons get the nutrients they need at the right time and in the the right amount.
